Cipla announces corrective surgery on final day of Mad Run

The Cipla Miles for Smiles Mad Run officially kicked off on Sunday 7 September and will see Cipla ultra-runners, David Grier and Andrew Stuart, braving the elements for 37kms per day for the entire week to raise awareness and funds for the plight of children born with cleft lips and palates.

As a result of their efforts and the seven other teams who will join them in completing the 37km run each day, Cipla Foundation and Operation Smile today announced that a surgery will take place on the final day of the Cipla Miles for Smiles Mad Run. Karli Pienaar, whose name literally means ‘small champion’, will receive her corrective surgery by Dr Pienaar at Vincent Pallotti Hospital on Saturday 13 September.

“We are thrilled to be making a difference to the lives of these children, and what a happy coincidence that a surgery will take place in Cape Town on the final day of the Mad Run,” says David Grier, Managing Trustee of Cipla SA Foundation.

The event will close with the celebration of the Table Mountain Crazy Run’s 10 year anniversary on 13 September.

Cipla SA, Director of Corporate Affairs, Rynard van der Westhuizen, says this innovative and worthy charity concept ties into Cipla SA’s ethos of advancing health care for all South Africans.

“We are extremely proud of the Cipla runners for attempting this remarkable feat and we will continue to deliver on our promise of expanding affordable healthcare throughout the country.”

All funds raised as part of this event will go towards the Cipla Miles for Smiles initiative.
