OPERATION SMILE AMBASSADOR BREAKS CAIRO TO CAPE WORLD CYCLING RECORD

In an attempt to raise funds and awareness for the plight of children born with cleft lips and palettes, Operation Smile ambassador, Keegan Longueira, yesterday broke the Cairo to Cape world cycling record as he arrived at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town just after 14:00.   To increase the funds raised through this initiative, 23-year-old Longueira challenged all the schools in eMalahleni to raise funds by implementing an Operation Smile casual-day. Longueira and the Cape Trek Project, who facilitated the journey, extended their sincere gratitude to Audeamus, Robert Carruthers, Cambridge Academy, Laerskool Kragbron and St Thomas Aquinas for meeting the challenge and showing support for this worthy initiative.   The previous world record was held by Dutch cyclist Robert Knol, who cycled from Cairo, Egypt, to Cape Town, South Africa, in 70 days and 3 hours from 24 January to 4 April 2011. Longueira completed the journey in 59 days and 8 hours, thereby pioneering his way to world record-holder status while changing the lives of at least 2 children.   To show their continued support for Operation Smile, Cipla Medpro, the third largest pharmaceutical company in South Africa – who through their Miles for Smiles CSI initiatives have raised over R8-million to facilitate just under 2000 corrective surgeries for Operation Smile – agreed to join Longueira for the last leg of the challenge. 8 Cipla employees including Chief Executive Officer – Paul Miller and Rynard van der Westhuizen- Director of Corporate Affairs completed the final 22 kilometres with Longueira.   All funds raised as part of this event goes towards the Operation Smile and individuals who wish to change lives one smile at a time, as well as show their support to the cyclists and their remarkable feat, may contribute by submitting donations here:   Account Name: Operation Smile Branch Code: 020009 Account Number: 070431566 Account Type: Current Account Branch Details: Standard Bank, Thibault Square Reference: Cape Trek
