Design a chair with donated socks.

As a pharmaceutical company, we’re exploring ways to go green as a business. As part of our #CrazySocks4Docs campaign, which raised awareness around the mental health of healthcare professionals, we collected thousands of used socks as we know that textiles are also a major factor in terms of pollution. We’d like to turn thousands of donated socks into gorgeous, unusual but sustainably produced chairs, which will be auctioned.

We’re asking South African designers – the up-and-coming ones as well as the established names in the industry – to design a unique, sustainably made chair or bench. The chairs or benches will be placed in various locations so that people can sit and take a “mental health moment”. Proceeds of the auction will be donated towards the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) free counselling helpline.

Submission requirements

  • The chair or bench must be functional.
  • You must use biodegradable or fully recycled materials/ eco-friendly and local, sustainably sourced materials.
  • The recycled socks must be included in the design, in a quirky or stylish way.
  • Photos of the chair created must be accompanied by a short description of your design inspiration. The explanation must not exceed 300 words.
  • Submissions can be emailed to fidelia.vanderlinde@cipla.com.
  • The chairs will be showcased during a physical exhibition, and also via means of an auction.

  • There are no entry or registration fees. It is free to enter.
  • You may enter multiple times.

  • The winners will be announced in January 2023.
  • The prize money for the winning chair is R150 000.
